Nandi – the sacred cow in Hinduism, but also the bull, the guardian of Shivas temple. Multisexual? ”Nandi is God” explains the hindu taxi driver. In South Africa Nandi is the powerful Zulu Queen, the mother of mighty warrior chief Shaka Zulu who almost beat the British colonial army back in the 1800s. When you fly to Fiji, you will land in Nandi airport, meanwhile in Kenya you can eat breakfast with the Nandi people in Nandi Hills. Around the world, Nandi means everything from hippo, naked, cheers… Each friend from different parts of the world bring new meanings to my name.
Nandi Lee –that is me, travelling the world, meeting new and old friends. To fight injustice and prejudice in all ways, in a neverending search for equality and human rights is my mission. My music and my words are my weapons. Like one of my sources of inspiration, the amazing Del la Grace Volcano says: I believe in crossing the line as many times as it takes to build a bridge we can all walk across.
During my trips I’ve played in many shows and bands around the world. I have laughed together with children in refugee camps, gone wild on punk rock tours with cult band Vagina Grande and sung with interns in Swedish jails. I’ve performed circus in the mighty Blue Hall in Stockholm and made music for South African plays in downtown Joburg. As Randy River I did crazy cowgal shows, oozing of whiskey, whips and crackalackin’ bad-ass jokes. I composed music for theatre plays as well as performed in them, playing a multitude of instruments: electric bass, piano, accordeon, guitar, percussion, harmonica… and of course always singing.
